It’s hot outside. Not just here in the sweltering American south, but no matter where you go in the northern hemisphere, things seem unusually warm. In Germany, the weather is so hot that it’s affecting crops. The German Farmers’ Association (or DBV in German abbreviation) has gone so far as to warn consumers that unusual heat will mean shrunken potatoes and smaller-than-desired French fries come harvest time. The Germans responded by immediately invading Poland.
Okay, while the Germans didn’t invade Poland, they are a bit upset to hear that their fries will be shrinking from 2.2 inches to about 1.8 inches thanks to a decline in extra-large potatoes that only divine intervention could stop. Said DBV spokeswoman Verena Telaar, “The French fries industry and consumers will have to brace themselves for shorter fries.” Even a shriveled spud still yields a tasty treat, so Germans should be thankful they’ve got any potatoes at all to nosh on! Plus, smaller potatoes means smaller portion sizes, which means healthier eating!
