Pucker up this weekend. Not just because it’s fun to smooch your sweetie, but because it’s time to honor the greatest generation. This Saturday, across the country, buglers will play Taps and couples in Times Square (and other places) will reenact one of history’s most famous kisses, the kiss that marked the end of WWII. That’s right, the commemoration of the 65th Anniversary of V-J Day is going to be celebrated with lip-locking.
In Times Square, the kissing will take place next to a 25-foot-tall statue of nurse Edith Shain and the anonymous sailor boy who planted the smooch of victory on her unprepared lips. Unfortunately, Ms. Shain didn’t make it to see the event, but the spirit, and that picture, will live on forever as one of the most poignant expressions of sheer joy ever captured on film.
