In his movies, like Crocodile Dundee and its sequels, Paul Hogan made a lot of hay out of being a fish out of water. These days, the 70-year-old actor is more like a fish IN hot water. While in Sydney, Australia, to attend the funeral of his mother (who died at 101), Paul Hogan was detained by Australian authorities and forbidden to leave the country.
Why? Well, Hogan and the Australia Tax Office have a longstanding feud over millions of dollars in taxes Hogan supposedly owed. Hogan and his accountants were caught up in Operation Wickenby, a $300-million-dollar tax fraud investigation which began in 2003. Despite the Australian Crime Commission being forced to pay Hogan $5 million in legal fees, he’s apparently a shrimp still on a very hot legal barbie.
In the old days, you could do that; these days, governments are sucking every penny they can get out of you. It’s just a shame they had to bust him at his mother’s funeral. That seems a little harsh.
