A police helicopter turned into an impromptu police bomber in Columbus, Ohio. The Columbus Police Department’s helicopter had a pretty nice $100,000 infrared camera attached to its belly. I say had, because that camera is currently a $100,000 pile of garbage after the camera fell from its moorings on the helicopter and crash-landed onto three parked cars in mid-flight.
At the time, the helicopter was actually using the infrared camera to search for a missing woman. The camera had been recently reinstalled onto the helicopter for just that purpose. Until, of course, it turned into a heli-bomber. Fortunately, while the three cars were damaged (one heavily), no one was inside the cars and no one was hurt by the falling projectile. Hopefully the missing woman was found, too.
Police and FAA officials are investigating the incident. I think it was a test of a brand-new belly-mounted car disabling device. You know, to stop high speed chases. The camera just hovers over the car, lines up, and kabong, drops a camera onto the fleeing suspect’s vehicle. No more car chase!
