Jeopardy is something of an institution. The show has been on the air what seems like forever, and no doubt host Alex Trebek has seen it all more than once. However, what he’s never seen is a contestant quite like Roger Craig, a 33-year-old graduate student at the University of Delaware. Roger Craig won $77,000, the most ever won by a Jeopardy contestant in a single game. He beat the single-game record of $75,000 set by Ken Jennings six years ago.
So how did Craig win all that Jeopardy money? Well, if you believe him, it’s a combination of good luck and skill, as well as a little recklessness. “I made a lot of big wagers on Daily Doubles. I was really confident in certain categories and took advantage of those opportunities to earn as much money as I could … I lucked out on my first game with a chemistry daily double. My undergrad degree is in bio chem. I knew that I had a chance to set the new record going into Final Jeopardy so I thought what the heck … I’ll go for it.”
However, despite Craig’s impressive feat, and his two-day total of $114,000 in winnings, he’s got a ways to go: Ken Jennings won over $3 million dollars during his time on the show. Still, for two days’ work, $114,000 is a pretty good payout, don’t you think? Even after the government takes half, that’s very impressive work. He’s in a class all by himself, thanks to his game-show win.
