Melvin Jesse Blain is what you’d call a career criminal. He just spent 46 months in jail for bank robbery, and one of the first things he does when he gets out is goes to rob another bank. Police say 31-year-old Blain walked into a Wachovia Bank branch in North Charleston, South Carolina, and asked for $30,000 in $100 bills. When the teller told the crook the bank didn’t have any money, Melvin Blain politely thanked her and walked out of the bank. Police apprehended him walking down the street outside the bank.
It’s a strange situation, made stranger by the robber’s politeness (rather than his age or his crazy outfit). I’m not sure I get why he was so nice about the robbery, or why he believed a bank didn’t have any money when, by law, they have to have a certain amount of cash on hand in the event of a run on the banks. Still, it apparently worked, because the guy just walked off without cash and admitted to the police he walked into the bank and demanded money.
