The problem with social networking, and using social networks for party invitations, is that you can pretty much invite whoever you want. When 14-year-old Rebecca Javeleau wanted to invite 15 friends over for her 15th birthday party on October 7, she did what most kids her age would do: she created a Facebook invite. Unfortunately, the teen created a public birthday party invitation and 21,000 people have RSVP’d.
“Her party is cancelled and she will be lucky to get a birthday card from me after this,” said Rebecca’s mother Tracey Livesey. “I said she could have 15 friends along to the party but my sister-in-law said that 8,000 people had said on Facebook that they were coming. She did not realise that she was creating a public event and should have done. She is going to have to change her mobile phone SIM card because of the number of calls she has been getting about it. Rebecca did not understand the privacy settings and she has lost her internet as a result of that – I’ve taken away her computer so she won’t make that mistake again.”
It’s weird that a birthday party invitation would attract so much attention, but then again, we’ve covered wedding invitation videos that have gone viral in the past, so it’s not too surprising. People will show up to any event, especially if there’s free food. You have to feel bad for the girl, though; this has to be mortifying for a teenager.
