It’s a story that would’ve been fatal had it not been for the handiness of courgettes. In Frenchtown, Montana, a fairly small little town, a woman was in her house around midnight when she heard some noise outside. When she turned on the lights, she discovered that her 12-year-old collie was being attacked by a 200-pound black bear. Like anyone else, she screamed and got the bear’s attention to save her dog. After the bear took a swipe at her, she jumped into her kitchen and grabbed the nearest object. She threw a 12-inch-long zucchini. The zucchini hit the bear in the head, startling it and scaring it off.
She saved her life with a summer squash. More importantly, if you pelt a bear with vegetables, it will leave and you won’t have to shoot it on your back porch. No need to grab a knife or hurl a butcher block, just grab some veggies and start chucking! The woman did not need medical attention. Wildlife officials are hunting for the bear as we speak. The news report didn’t update the status of the dog, but hopefully he or she is okay, too. A story this improbable deserves a happy ending for all involved.
