Less than a year ago, British multi-millionaire Jimi Heselden bought the Segway company from founder and inventor Dean Kamen. Now, Heselden is dead. The new owner of the Segway company suffered a fatal accident while riding his Segway, having driven his two-wheeled personal vehicle off a cliff overlooking the River Wharfe on his Yorkshire estate.
Jimi Heselden was worth $265 million dollars and, at the time of his death, was one of the largest philanthropists in the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, his test run of an offroad-capable Segway apparently went horribly wrong. Heselden’s body and a ruined Segway were recovered from the scene of the accident. The very definition of a self-made man, Jimi Heselden left home at 15 to work in the mines of Leeds and struck it rich in 1990 after he invented a concertina design for wire cage walls that was sold to the British military.
You hate to see someone like this, who helped out others and who never forgot where he came from, suffer such a horrible accident. I can only imagine how terrible his last moments must have been. Dying is bad enough, but to die in a Segway accident when you’re the owner of Segway? Even worse, if only because of all the jokes.
