It’s hard for a man like Kim Jong-Il to admit he’s getting older, but at age 68 and with many health problems, the self-styled Dear Leader of North Korea has to be facing the fact that he won’t be around forever, and will likely not be able to continue ruling the family fiefdom in Pyongyang for very much longer. To that end, the ailing Kim Jong-Il has named an heir-apparent in the person of Kim Jong-un, his reclusive, Swiss-educated 27-year-old son. That’s about all that is known about Jong-un, who is the youngest of Jong-Il’s children and one of the few to retain a positive relationship with his father.
In a way, Jong-Il’s impending death might be the best thing for North Korea. He’s obviously not much of a leader, as the country’s economy has sputtered to the point where they’re trying to pay their bills with ginseng and can’t even finish building a major hotel in their capital city. This is the first time Jong-un has been mentioned by name in the North Korean media, which is a sign the build-up for his ascension is about to begin. No pictures of him exist (or can be verified absolutely as him).
