George Lucas just will not leave it alone. Every few years, he’ll go back to his beloved Star Wars saga and start tinkering with it. It was bad enough when he added new special effects and added in stuff like Greedo shooting first and Han talking to a skinny, moving Jabba the Hutt, but now he’s going too far. Lucas has announced plans to rerelease the Star Wars films in 3D, starting with The Phantom Menace and working down to Return of the Jedi. The first film is scheduled to hit theaters in 2012, with other Star Wars films coming out every year at the same time afterward.
“Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right,” said Industrial Light and Magic visual effects supervisor John Knoll. “It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results. For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience.”
I have no doubt the conversions, which will take a year per film, will be incredible. I have no doubt that the new Star Wars versions will look amazing. I have many doubts about whether or not Lucas will stop adding, moving, and changing things between now and then. I know he’ll keep tinkering and adding in Gungans and ruining things; that’s why me, a former Star Wars fan, is officially renouncing the franchise. Do what you want, George. I don’t care anymore.
