Facing a budget shortfall of nearly $3.8 billion dollars US (or 2.4 billion British pounds), police departments throughout the UK are looking for ways to make ends meet. Besides the inevitable increase in parking tickets and the like, police officials are also turning to an unusual sale to make ends meet. Specifically, the Avon and Somerset Constabulary is auctioning off underwear to pay the bills via an eBay-style police property disposal auction.
They’re not the only police force selling off their old underwear either. Another 18 police departments have signed up to the website, and more are expected to join (especially if the budget cuts keep on coming). Ken Dawes, the man in charge of evidence for Avon and Somerset said, “Clothing might seem strange but it is relatively run of the mill for us. It is quite easy for shop lifters to grab so we get lots of small things like clothing, jewellery and perfume.” He added that last year the department made 60,000 pounds from selling lost or stolen items, though they would never knowingly sell counterfeit goods.
So, you’re getting unworn designer duds at bargain-basement prices? Sounds like a good deal to me. I wouldn’t buy any underwear that way, but for something more fashionable? Sure, I’d do it. You would too, if you thought you could get away with it!
