It’s the rarest baseball card in the world. A T206 Honus Wagner card, of which only 60 are known to exist, is incredibly valuable no matter how beaten up or damaged it might be. Just having one is a minor miracle, of which the School Sisters of Notre Dame are incredibly thankful. The Honus Wagner card was willed to Sister Virginia Mueller in 1999 by her brother. Now, Sister Mueller is going to auction off the miracle baseball card, which is expected to fetch several hundred thousand dollars.
This card is in terrible shape. The white border was cut of of three sides, the card is creased, and it has even been laminated. That doesn’t matter; the card is expected to fetch nearly $200,000 when auctioned off, the proceeds of which will go towards supporting the Baltimore-based School Sisters of Notre Dame’s education work in 35 different countries. This is a staggeringly rare card. A mint Honus Wagner went for $2.8 million dollars in 2007, more than a one-of-a-kind penny.
“The T206 set is known as ‘The Monster’ among collectors. It’s just really tough to complete the entire set,” said Chris Ivy of Heritage Auction Galleries, which is handling the auction. The Wagner card from the American Tobacco Company is “one of those that’s always sought-after, always desirable, and there’s not a big population of them. Even in a lower grade, they do have quite a bit of demand and command a strong price.”
