The San Francisco Giants, despite having one of the best pitchers in baseball in the person of wiry, long-haired Tim Lincecum, weren’t supposed to do anything this year. After all, they had some pitching, but they have no offense. Their team is built off of cast-offs from other teams, unwanted free agents, and other assorted “misfits and castoffs.” Adding to that, the team hadn’t won a World Series since 1954, when the Giants still called New York home. Well, there must be some magic left in San Fran, as the Giants have beaten the Rangers to claim the 2010 World Series title.
“It’s a euphoric feeling that’s so hard to describe,” said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. “For us to win for our fans, it’s never been done there, and with all those great teams. And what was neat through all this is Willie McCovey and Willie Mays, Will Clark, J.T. Snow, Shawon Dunston, all those guys that played on World Series teams, they were in the clubhouse, they were pulling for these guys. They wanted them to win, and the players felt that along with the fans.”
The team that was built on pitching claimed the first two games thanks to their offense, with uncharacteristically high scoring games in the first two games of the World Series. After that, the scores fell, but not the spirits, as San Francisco won games four and five in impressive fashion, keeping the potent bats of the Texas Rangers at bay. The World Series victory parade is scheduled for Wednesday.
