Well, gone are the days of face time, punches in the face, face-up defense, getting facepalmed, and faceplanting after a particularly bad skateboarding move. While all those things will still exist, they’ll probably have to be called something else after the US Patent And Trademark Office allowed Facebook a patent. Facebook now owns the word Face for all official uses, assuming they pay the money and roll out Facesomething products (like a Face-to-Facebook breakup service?).
According to Facebook’s approved patent and trademark paperwork, here’s what they own the Facerights to: “Telecommunication services, namely, providing online chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among computer users in the field of general interest and concerning social and entertainment subject matter, none primarily featuring or relating to motoring or to cars.”
Hey, at least the smiley face has been liberated from copyright hell. Err, rather, the smiley. I forgot, you can’t call it a face anymore.
