It’s one of the more terrifying prospects for any sports fan. If you’re a sports fan and you routinely attend games, then you’re familiar with the nosebleed seats. You sit up high in the bleachers or grandstand, with nothing preventing you from toppling over save a chain link fence or a similar level of security. One person’s nightmare became another person’s reality. Yesterday, during the Sunday afternoon National Football League game between the Chicago Bears and the Philadelphia Eagles, a 27-year-old man fell from the stands at Soldier Field, killing himself.
The fan fell from the top of the grandstand to the outside of the stadium, where he landed on pavement. He was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 5:27 PM, less than 30 minutes after he had his fateful fall. Police are currently investigating the accident. For what it’s worth, the Bears won the game 31-26.
This is not the first time a fan has fallen out of the stands, but it is the first time in a long time where the result has been a fatality. I’d imagine the end result of all this is a beefed-up cyclone fence around the upper deck of the stadium, but aside from that, sometimes accidents just happen.
