One of the coolest things I can imagine is hopping on a cruise ship and steaming off for the frozen waters of Antarctica. I’ve always wanted to see penguins in person, and Antarctica is beautiful, so this is something that I used to be interested in. I say “used to be” because after watching footage of the Clelia II Antarctic cruise ship being battered and damaged by fierce ocean waves, my interest is suddenly waning. The Clelia II was disabled by the storm, leaving the 160 people on board stranded without electricity off the coast of Antarctica.
Bad weather caused monster 30-foot waves in the waters of the Drake Passage. As the waves washed over the ship, they broke windows. The frigid sea water blew out the ship’s electronics systems, which “caused a temporary loss of communications and affected engine performance,” according to the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators. Fortunately, the vessel was able to be repaired fairly quickly, but not before the 100 passengers and 60 crew on board got the scare of their lives.
The ship departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on November 30. It was on its way back to port when disaster struck. Fortunately, no one was injured.
