Oh, Michael Moore. I’m not sure what to think about you and your kind of celebrity activist. Do I think your heart is in the right place? I think that you think you’re doing the right thing, and you’ve got the money to do whatever you want. Michael Moore has donated $20,000 to help bail out WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. He’s not the only celebrity to take up the cause, either; Moore is joined by model Bianca Jagger, filmmakers Ken Loach and John Pilger, and writer Jemima Khan, among others.
If you really want to support the cause of freedom, then don’t give money to bail a guy out of jail. Give money to OpenLeaks. Donate to WikiLeaks, if you must. But don’t help out a guy who may or may not be a criminal, and who will probably go on the lam once he’s out on bail. I have my suspicions about the validity of the complaints against Julian Assange, but it’s not my place to interfere in the course of justice via the court of public opinion. That’s between Assange and the legal system.
Let’s not make Julian Assange the next Roman Polanski, please.
