How quickly the tune can change when public opinion shifts. Just a few days ago, Emirates Palace Hotel was bragging about its $11 million dollar Christmas tree decorated with expensive jewelery. The Emirates Palace is actually apologizing for the $11 million dollar Christmas tree after critics said the stunt was in bad taste. The hotel is insisting that they’re merely the venue exhibiting the Christmas tree and that the real culprits behind the ostentatious display of wealth are Style Gallery, the jeweler that provided the baubles for the fir, because a place with a gold vending machine is all about being classy.
“The hotel is just a venue for exhibiting the tree,” claimed the hotel in a statement to UAE’s state-run media. The hotel expressed regret for its “attempts to overload the tradition followed by most hotels in the country with meanings and connotations that do not fall in line with the professional standards which the Emirates Palace Hotel keenly respects and complies with.” The hotel added, “Putting the Christmas tree is not a novelty, rather it is a tradition meant to share in celebrating occasions guests hold while they are away from their home countries and families, which is within the framework of the UAE’s policy which is based on the values of openness and tolerance.”
