When Stephen Griffiths was arraigned by Leeds Crown Court for three murders he committed in Bradford, he didn’t announce his name as Stephen Griffiths, he announced himself as Crossbow Cannibal. The Crossbow Cannibal is what the media has dubbed Griffiths for killing three women and eating parts of them in a brutal and shocking serial murder spree. Blood from three missing women, Suzanne Blamires, 36; Shelley Armitage, 31; and Susan Rushworth, 46; was found in Griffiths’s one-bedroom apartment. He is also the prime suspect in the disappearances of three other women from the area.
Griffiths, posting to MySpace under the pseudonym Ven Pariah, wrote this ominous paragraph: “What will this pseudo-human do, one wonders. Poor Stephen, pretended to be me, but he was only the wrapping. He knew towards the end, that I supplied the inner core of iron. Hatred Bound Tightly In Flesh. At very long last, the time has come to act out.”
He has also called himself the SF killer, The Bloodbath Artist, and once told police he was studying for a Ph.D. in homicide. His apartment was full of power tools and equipment used to dismember his victims, he boiled and ate parts from them, and he even took video of his crimes using a camera phone. A surveillance system outside his third-floor flat clued police into Griffith’s predilection, after he was caught on video shooting Suzanne Blamires with a crossbow, then toasting the closed-circuit camera with a beverage can after firing an iron bolt into her head. The police found 81 pieces of Blamires scattered in River Aire in Shipley, with a piece of steel blade and a crossbow bolt stuck into her severed head.
