The shocking thing about the end of UConn’s NCAA-record winning streak isn’t that the streak was broken, but how the streak was broken. Behind Jeanette Pohlen’s career high 31 points, the Stanford Cardinal has defeated the UConn Huskies 71-50 to snap UConn’s NCAA-record winning streak at 90. Stanford is notable for being the last team to defeat UConn, besting the Lady Huskies in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Now, history has repeated itself, with Stanford dominating the game throughout.
“At some point reality had to set in, and today reality set in. I’m not destroyed about it. Winning that many games in a row, it’s unheard of,” said Geno Auriemma, UConn’s head coach. “I thought we let it get away from us. I think the atmosphere and what was going on and when Maya couldn’t get going early. I think it affected the rest of our guys. We just didn’t play like ourselves. Give credit to Stanford. I think they played an unbelievably good game. When you see what happens tonight and how it happened, I think you can appreciate it even more what it took to get to that point and how many things can go wrong and how you can have bad nights.”
Of course, the end of one streak allowed another streak to continue. Stanford hasn’t lost at the Maples Pavilion, their home arena, in 52 games. Stanford’s last home loss was March 2007, when it was upset in the NCAA Tournament’s second round by Florida State.
