Just a few days ago, it was announced that Starbucks was bringing a payment app to the world of the Blackberry and Apple iDevice. Since that came out, Apple has taken the ball and run with it. Where the Starbucks app was a scanned barcode that displayed on the screen, Apple is turning its payment system into a no-touch, no-scan, no-swipe method. Basically, you pass your device within a few inches of a receiver, and near-field communication allows you to make payments using your iPad or iPhone. Your iPhone or iPad may soon become a replacement for your credit cards!
Apple has already constructed a proprietary payment terminal, which experts believe Apple will give away to interested stores in an attempt to push adoption of NFC onto its users. While the NFC isn’t currently available on iPads and iPhones, it’s only a matter of time until Apple rolls that out as well. The wireless field is shielded and secure and has a very limited range, so you won’t have to worry about accidentally buying someone else’s coffee.
