Well, the time has come and gone, and the news out of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, is good for all of those who are suffering under the massive blizzard that struck the United States yesterday. As it happens, your troubles will be over soon, at least according to the famous weather predicting groundhog Punxsutawney Phil. Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow yesterday, which means spring will be coming earlier than expected and we won’t get that dreaded six more weeks of winter. Huzzah!
“There is no question that Phil is capable of feeling empathy, but he is absolutely incapable of error,” said Mike Johnston of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle when asked whether or not Phil’s prediction of an early spring was in response to some of the worst weather in Groundhog Day history. Added Johnston, “It was an absolute disaster weather-wise.”
Indeed, the weather was terrible thanks to sleet and snow and freezing temperatures, and the crowd of 5,000 on hand to celebrate the 125th edition of Groundhog Day at Gobbler’s Knob was only about half the usual number of attendees and well off the high mark of 40,000. Phil last predicted an early spring in 2007
