Christians and Muslims have been enemies for thousands of years. In a country like Egypt, which has a significant Christian minority of 10 to 20 million people in a majority Muslim country, you’d think that the recent unrest would lead to an increase in religious-motivated violence. However, that’s not the case. Last week, Christians joined hands to protect praying Muslims from pro-Mubarak forces; now, Muslims have banded together to protect Christians performing a church service in Tahrir Square.
It’s kind of amazing, isn’t it? Maybe things won’t turn out so bad for Egypt after all. If Muslims and Christians can united against a common enemy, then maybe they’ll still be working together after Mubarak leaves office to form a unified, democratic government in which all sides of the issue, Muslim and Christian, can practice their respective religions without fear of discrimination and violence.
