For more than 20 years now the writers for The Simpsons have entertained on many levels.
Much of what the writers have done has been overt.
They’ve mocked and made us laugh with their takes on pop culture references, sports jokes, political tenets and religious statements in their episodes.
Television’s longest-running show has even added words to our language.
That’s an influence.
But now, years later, rumors are swirling that one of their biggest undercover jokes has finally come to light.
The story goes that the show’s action hero character McBain was involved in something small that turned into something big.
When the McBain clips from the show are spliced together, they appear to create a credible spoof of action flicks from the 80s and 90s, mirroring the plots of many Arnold Schwarzenegger (who the Simpson’ character is based upon), Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson shoot-em-up, blow-em-up flicks.
The Simpsons exec producer Al Jean blows that theory out of the water. Jean told Entertainment Weekly that the McBain film clips were never intended to be put together to form a greater whole.
But in the interiew he does sort of provide another challenge to mash-up artists out there – one full-length movie of all the Itchy and Scratchy clips from the show.
Now that’s something gruesome I’d like to see.
