When Amazon Prime was just free two-day shipping, the cost was a bit too much for me to justify. I’d love to get my ordered goods in two days, but dropping $70 per year was a bit too steep for how little I order from Amazon. I’m willing to wait to get my DVDs, thanks. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one, so Amazon is sweetening the deal. Amazon is adding streaming video to their Amazon Prime service, keeping the two-day shipping, AND not increasing the price.
For $7 a month, you can now watch 5000 streaming movies and TV shows from Amazon, in addition to whatever Amazon On Demand videos you might own. In addition, if you own a Roku box for your Netflix streaming, you’ll be able to add Amazon Prime streaming to your Roku, too (via the Amazon Instant Video Channel).
Is that enough to lure you away from streaming leader Netflix or the Criterion-heavy Hulu Plus? I’m keeping my Netflix, but the addition of streaming video does make the Amazon offering that much more lucrative. I’d have to see what’s on there before I left my beloved Netflix, but it’s definitely tempting.
