Mozilla’s making a list, it’s checking it twice (well, weekly), and they’re going to find out not who is naughty or nice, but who is slower than ice thanks to a new initiative dedicated to speeding up the venerable Firefox browser. Mozilla Firefox is putting together a weekly name-and-shame list of the 40 slowest add-ons to populate the average user’s web browser. If you’re looking to improve your browser performance, here’s the top 10 slowest browser add-ons according to Mozilla.
“On average, each add-on you install adds about 10 percent to Firefox start-up time,” says Mozilla product manager Justin Scott. “For some users that’s mere milliseconds, and for others it may be half a second; it all depends on the hardware and software of each individual.”
I recently switched full time from Firefox to Google Chrome, and there were a few reasons why, but first and foremost? I needed a faster browser, and Google Chrome was a lot faster than Firefox was. Of course, I was only running AdBlock Plus on my Firefox browser (and I run it on Google Chrome), and it’s not in the top ten of add-on slow-downs, but I’ve definitely noticed improved performance by making the switch.
Still, all credit to Mozilla in their attempt to improve the performance of their browser by any means necessary, even if it irritates some developers.
