Nothing phases Roger Goodell. Nothing.
Well, they certainly didn’t waste any time in confronting the elephant in the room, did they? During last night’s National Football League draft, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell walked up to the mic to begin the draft and was greeted by a chorus of boos. After all, this is the first work stoppage for the NFL since 1987 and it interrupts an otherwise profitable, highly-successful league that’s the biggest sporting league in the world. So, naturally, Goodell faced boos all night last night.
Still, in spite of the boos, the draft went off without a hitch. The first pick, belonging to the Carolina Panthers, went to Auburn QB Cam Newton, which wasn’t a surprise. There weren’t a lot of surprises in the first round of the draft, really, except for Cincinnati picking Georgia wide receiver AJ Green and the traditional mess-ups. Here’s a complete list of who went where in the NFL Draft’s first round.
The Vikings essentially wasted a 12th pick on Florida State University quarterback Christian Ponder. That’s right, the very same Christian Ponder who was projected to go in the second round got picked entirely too early, ahead of legitimately talented quarterbacks like Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett and hotter names like TCU’s Andy Dalton. As for the Baltimore Ravens, they accidentally let their time elapse and got lapped in draft order by the Kansas City Chiefs.
