The Aria Resort & Casino, now with extra Legionnaire's Disease.
You’d think that Las Vegas would be a wonderland for adults, kind of a Disneyland with gambling and partial nudity. And, from what I hear, it is all those things. However, it’s not perfect. One of the hazards of staying at any hotel or on any cruise ship is exposure to Legionella bacteria, which cause Legionnaire’s Disease. Recent guests at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas’s CityCenter are being warned of a possible Legionnaire’s Disease outbreak.
Legionnaire’s Disease kind of makes a heat-ray hotel facade or a horrible game of bowling look like nothing. So far, only six cases of the bacterial pneumonia have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but that number will probably go since guests from June 21 through July 4 were exposed.
“To become infected, you must inhale aerosolized water (mist). For example, if the water system has Legionella, you could be exposed by taking a long shower or using ‘bubblemakers’ or whirlpool jets in a bath tub,” said Stephanie Bethel of the Southern Nevada Health District. “It’s important to know that most people who are exposed will not get sick, but people who have weak immune systems, people who smoke, people who are older are more at risk of illness.”
