Some might call her foolhardy, but Brooke Collins just loves her dog Fudge.
The Juneau, Alaska resident loves her dog enough to punch a bear in the nose to rescue it.
Collins let her beloved pet outside about 7:30 on Sunday evening and Fudge quickly began barking frantically. The 22-year-old woman went out to check on her pooch and saw it dangling from the mouth of a black bear like a salmon. Thinking only about her pet, she strode over to it and punched it in the nose. The startled bear dropped Fudge and rambled back into the forest. Imagine his bear shame having been defeated by a young woman. I wonder if he’ll be mocked by his fellow bears more than a bald bear is.
Collins should be glad the intruder didn’t get climb into her car. It might have been more difficult to remove the bear from her passenger seat.
Fudge only suffered a few marks from the bear’s claws and teeth, but none were deep enough to cause worry. There’s no report on the condition of the bear’s nose.
Collins should start training Fudge for the Weiner Nationals so maybe next time he’ll be able to outrun his predator.
