When Cam Newton tied a rookie record for passing yards last week, it was pretty noteworthy, but also dismissed pretty easily. After all, anyone can throw for 400 yards on the Arizona Cardinals, assuming they’re an NFL-quality quarterback. The test, the naysayers like myself said, would be against the superior Green Bay Packers, defending NFL champs and one of the league’s best defenses. Well, as it turns out, Cam Newton might be the real deal, as he broke the rookie passing yards mark by throwing for 432 yards. However, it was all for naught as Green Bay beat Carolina 30-23.
Newton also set a record by throwing for 854 yards in his first two games, the most all time. During last night’s game, he went 28-46 with 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. Newton also ran 10 times for 53 yards and another score. He was Carolina’s leading passer and leading rusher for the game; now if only he could throw passes to himself, he might be onto something!
“I think someone said in the locker room that I’m kind of glad we played him early in the season,” said Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers, “because when he figures it out fully, he’s going to be even tougher to stop.”
