Nathan and Natalie Barbosa, dueling babies from dueling uteruses.
Four years ago, Andreea Barbosa learned about an unusual medical condition she has during a routine exam. She is one of 2000 women world-wide who have a condition known as uterus didelphys, which means she has two separate uteruses, rather than one. For most women, that means their chances of having children without fertility treatments are low, but for Andreea, that just means she’s got twice the chance of having children. Andreea Barbosa had two children, each out of a different uterus.
Mom Andreea and children Nathan and Natalie Barbosa had essentially a standard birth, to boot. There were some problems during pregnancy, but they were normal problems, like the common pregnancy issue placenta previa. There were no difficulties associated with her double uteruses or her twins. The two children are the result of two eggs being released at the same time into the two uteruses, which is pretty incredible. The odds of such a pregnancy are one in 5,000,000.
The children were delivered on September 15 at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida, and all are doing well.
