What lives beneath the sea’s surface is still very often a mystery. And I’m not just talking about narwhals and their jousting.
Marine biologists are still trying to gain knowledge about many of the tiniest sea creatures. Bioluminescence is currently attracting the attention of both professionals and folks who just like visiting the beach in San Diego County.
Due to a strong red tide, the incoming evening waves are a visual treat. The large volume of tiny organisms in the water have been flashing their lights, creating the beautifully haunting glowing neon blue waves rolling in toward shore. Scientists believe in the case of small organisms like these, the bioluminescence is used to try to attract fish to eat the predators that like to prey on the tiny organisms.
Maybe the only thing stranger than seeing neon blue waves would be seeing an alpaca surfing upon them.
At least this is a harmless invasion of the waters around San Diego, unlike the poisonous spiders that are moving into the city.
