Just when you thought the conference realignment frenzy was over, it has just begun. When Texas A&M left the Big 12 for the SEC, it started a chain reaction. Syracuse and UConn left the Big East for the ACC, and that kicked off a wave of migration away from the Big East towards a viable conference. TCU reversed field, leaving the Big East without playing a game to head to the Big 12. Missouri will be leaving the Big 12 any day now to join the SEC. Now, another Big East member is fleeing. West Virginia will be leaving the Big East for the Big 12 as soon as possible, according to sources.
The move depends on timing. Namely, when Missouri leaves for the SEC, a very-tired West Virginia will leave for the Big 12, and not before. That leaves the Big East in a lurch; they’ll only have 5 teams that play football, and a pretty thin field of teams to choose from assuming they want to continue to exist as a BCS automatic qualifier. The worst BCS conference gets significantly weaker by subtraction, and there’s not much out there they can add.
Rumors say that the Big East will be courting Boise State, Navy, and Air Force as football-only schools while adding Central Florida, SMU, and Houston for all sports, but why would SMU and Houston want to join the Big East when they can try to angle for invites into the Texas-centric Big 12? Ditto Boise, whose Mountain West Conference looks significantly tougher/more prestigious than the Big East following the MWC’s merger with Conference USA. The Big East better hope they can pick up some scraps from the C-USA’s football division, or they may no longer exist by this time next year.
