With the St. Louis Cardinals closing out the 2011 baseball season with their World Series win, basketball fans are getting geared up to see their teams take over the spotlight.
While the NBA is stuck in a lockout during labor negotiations between the owners and players and games are being cancelled, college hoop fans are celebrating the start to their season. And no fans celebrate the opening game quite the way the students and fans do at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
Immediately after the first basket made by the university’s men’s basketball team at their first home game, fans toss rolls and rolls of toilet paper onto the court. The ensuing rain of white paper unfurling creates quite a sight. The JBU Eagles head coach is willing to suffer through the two free throws by the opponent that accompany the technical foul that is inevitable called. Who wouldn’t put up with a couple of free throws in order to get an arena full of your fans all fired up?
Eagles fans have occasionally even boldly enacted their tradition during road games.
