For most of Joe Paterno’s 46 year reign as head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions, Penn State has been the cleanest, most upstanding program in college athletics, let alone college football or the Big Ten. Under JoePa’s grandfatherly gaze, Penn State has run a clean ship, avoiding NCAA pitfalls and following all the rules as best as possible. However, while coaches and athletics officials were watching the players, nobody was watching the coaches. Former Penn State defensive coordinator Gerald “Jerry” Sandusky was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting 8 boys. Sandusky met the boys via The Second Mile, a foundation Sandusky established to help at-risk children (which makes the whole situation even more sickening).
“If this is true we were all fooled, along with scores of professionals trained in such things, and we grieve for the victims and their families. They are in our prayers,” said a statement issued by Paterno via his son Scott. “It was obvious that the witness was distraught over what he saw, but he at no time related to me the very specific actions contained in the grand jury report. Regardless, it was clear that the witness saw something inappropriate involving Mr. Sandusky. As coach Sandusky was retired from our coaching staff at that time, I referred the matter to university administrators.”
The university administrators in question are now the ones facing legal trouble. Current Penn State athletic director Tim Curley faces charges of perjury for lying to police concerning the allegations, while interim president Gary Schultz has stepped down in the wake of the scandal; he also faces charges of perjury. Joe Paterno, who testified before the grand jury concerning the allegations, has been cooperative and honest with authorities concerning a 2002 incident which occurred in the shower in Penn State’s locker room. Curley and Schultz are expected to surrender to authorities in Harrisburg today.
