Urban Meyer was on top of the world while at the University of Florida, competing for national titles and SEC championships in one of the United States’ most storied football programs. However, there was a lot of pressure, and Meyer had a lot of health problems. Those health problems forced Meyer to exit Florida in 2010. Well, you can’t keep a good coach down, and Urban Meyer is a great coach. Urban Meyer will be returning to coaching as the new head coach of Ohio State.
“A year ago in my mind I was convinced I was done coaching,” said the 47-year-old Meyer. “I had a health scare a couple of years ago that made me sit back, reflect. I didn’t feel right. But I feel fantastic now.”
The team’s last official head coach, Jim Tressel, resigned in disgrace after NCAA violations. Meyer, who was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, couldn’t resist the chance to take on the job at the school he grew up idolizing.
How big of a coaching deal is Meyer? Well, in ten seasons at Bowling Green, Utah, and Florida, he amassed a glittering 104-23 record. He went 7-1 in bowl games and won two national titles at Florida, including the 2007 title over Ohio State. As for current Ohio State coach Luke Fickell, he is going to stay on board as an assistant coach to Meyer and will coach Ohio State in their inevitable season-ending bowl game. Meyer has spent the last year since he retired as an analyst for ESPN.
