Well, that’s not exactly true. Yes, the Jacksonville Jaguars are currently involved in a franchise re-invigoration plan, but you can’t really fire an owner. Owners can only sell. The Jacksonville Jaguars have fired Jack Del Rio on the same day that Wayne Weaver sold the team. The team is now the property of Shahid Khan, a businessman originally born in Pakistan, who bought the struggling National Football League team from Weaver for a staggering $760 million dollars.
“It’s the right thing at the right time and for the right reasons,” said the 77-year-old Weaver. “We deserve better; the community deserves better. We’ve been very average over the last few years. I take responsibility for a lot of that, making mistakes in some personnel things, but look positive ahead that this team is not far away from being a very competitive football team.”
Jack Del Rio went 69-73 in his tenure with the team, and acquired a 1-2 record in two playoff appearances. Del Rio has been replaced by interim coach Mel Tucker. Jacksonville’s GM, Gene Smith, recently received a 3-year contract extension; Del Rio has been fired with one year left on his most recent extension. The NFL’s ownership is expected to approve the sale at their next meeting on December 14; if it passes, it would be come official on January 4, and the new era of the Jacksonville Jaguars would then begin.
