For many years, the rumored future king of web browsers was Mozilla Firefox, which was the first real challenger for Internet Explorer since Netscape went under. Well, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser is still the global kingpin in total market share, with 40.63 percent of total market share, but the real interesting thing is in the positions under #1. Google’s Chrome web browser has bypassed Mozilla’s Firefox as the second most popular web browser, according to StatCounter.
Per StatCounter’s global browser traffic data, Chrome accounted for 25.69 percent of browsers and Firefox accounted for 25.23 percent of active web browsers for November 2011. I guess all the positive Chrome press and videos have started to take effect. I know Chrome has surpassed Firefox for myself and for most people I know, but it will be interesting to see if this trend holds, or if either browser can challenge for IE’s throne of skulls.
Of course, people have been predicting IE’s demise for a long time, and it hasn’t happened yet. I guess we’ll see just how strong a challenger Google Chrome is.
