Tokyo’s famed Tsukiji Fish Market is one of the world’s busiest and most important fish auction houses. It seems that every year or so, someone buys a bluefin tuna for a record price. They’re kicking off the record prices early this year. A bluefin tuna has been sold for a staggering $735,000, which is yet another record price. This time, however, the fish stayed in Japan rather than going to a foreign destination.
“Rather than having it taken away overseas, I wish for Japanese people to eat good tuna together. Despite the March 11 earthquake and the sluggish economy, I want to lift up Japan’s spirits urging people to work hard together,” said Kiyoshi Kimura, owner of the Kiyomura Corporation that purchased the massive fish.
The fish, a very slow-growing fish prized for its meat’s umami, was caught by fisherman near the city of Oma, in Aomori Prefecture in Northern Japan. Aomori was hard-hit by the tsunami and earthquake last year, and its many small fishing villages depend heavily on fish such as this one to survive. This particular fish picked up $1247 per pound, roughly; that must be a tasty fish.
