When it comes to the modern music festival, two names stand out. One of these is Bonnaroo, Manchester, Tennessee’s hippie-centric music event. The other is California’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which takes place in April in beautiful Cali. The organizers of Coachella, AEG-owned GoldenVoice, have announced the full 2012 Coachella lineup, which spreads across six days and two consecutive weekends in April. Among the stand-outs are Radiohead, The Black Keys, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and many many more.
“We wanted to create access for as many people as possible,” said Paul Tollett, who has guided Coachella for AEG-owned GoldenVoice since the festival’s inception in 1999. “The thought of this selling out super quick, and the only people who get to go are the people who bought the first minute or bought tickets for more than they sold for, that didn’t seem great to us. We didn’t want to go with more people and ruin the experience. We can’t add a midnight show, and we didn’t want to add another city or raise the ticket price. So we decided to add another weekend.”
Among the fun aspects of big festivals like Coachella is the way it causes bands to reunite for the show. In this case, you’ve got bands like Swedish punks The Refused, art rockers At The Drive In, Mike Watt’s fIREHOSE, and Britpoppers Pulp, among the more noteworthy bands getting back together for the fest.
