The pranking instincts of Stephen Colbert are strong. Some months back, Colbert formed his own political action committee, dubbed the Colbert Super PAC. He did this simply because he could, and as it turns out, Colbert’s fans are pretty generous. However, the Colbert Super PAC will be forced to change its name. Stephen Colbert has announced he is forming an exploratory committee to possibly run for president in South Carolina. Control of the Colbert Super PAC is now in the hands of Colbert’s Washington rally ally, Jon Stewart.
Quoth Colbert: “I am proud to announce that I am forming an exploratory committee to lay the groundwork for my possible candidacy for the president of the United States of South Carolina!”
So what does this all mean? Well, since it’s all a joke, it’s probably meaningless. That said, Colbert is polling higher in South Carolina than John Huntsman, and he does have a PAC throwing the weight of its donations behind him. I doubt Colbert could break double-digits in South Carolina, but his candidacy might end up being fun should he actually enter the race and take that next step. If only for comedy purposes, he could get some mileage out of it.
