Things are looking might strange this morning around the Internet, and you have Congress to blame for that. Despite the massive groundswell of anti-censorship protests that forced companies like GoDaddy to shun the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act, Congress still hasn’t gotten the message. So, the Internet has united as one to blackout and show the public at large just how dangerous SOPA, PIPA, and online censorship are.
So, who all is blacking out to show support for freedom, democracy, and all the things that make the Internet great? Wikipedia, for one, will be going dark. So will reddit, Boing Boing, I Can Has Cheezburger, Mozilla, and even WordPress (the most popular blogging software online). Google won’t be going dark, but it will be adding a special ribbon to raise awareness. Let’s not forget that under SOPA and PIPA the methods the Egyptians used to spread their revolution and overturn a dictatorship would be illegal.
I’ve considered going dark here as well, but decided that, well… I can’t afford to, to be honest. So, I’m doing what I can. I’ll be calling and emailing my congressional representatives and putting this post up in the hopes that maybe the thousands of visitors I get per day can put their collective mass to good use and help keep the Internet (and sites like this one and all your favorites) up and running.
