The latest import to Major League Baseball has a destination. Japanese ace pitcher Yu Darvish was a hot commodity on the transfer market, and after a bidding war that captivated the hot stove season, a desintation has been agreed to. Yu Darvish is going to the Texas Rangers. The rich–Texas is a two-time American League champ and recent World Series competitor–keep getting richer. So does Yu Darvish, who agreed to a 6-year, $60-million-dollar contract with the Rangers.
“The thing that stood out probably is just his passion for the game and trying to be the best he can possibly be,” said Rangers President Nolan Ryan, himself a Hall of Fame pitcher. “He’s probably the most upside player I’ve ever seen come out of Japan.”
So why is Yu Darvish so good? In the past 7 seasons as a star in Japan, he racked up a 93-38 record with a 1.99 ERA. At 25 years old, he is a two-time MVP of Japan’s Pacific League and he’s a five-time All-Star. He has led the league in strikeouts three times and won the ERA title twice. Oh yeah, he’s also 6’5 and a classic power pitcher who has played in 167 games and averages 205 innings per season.
