If there’s one thing you can say about trainer Angelo Dundee, it’s that he knew champions. The world-famous boxing trainer guided 15 impressive world champions in his time, including such notable names as Carmen Basilio, Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, and his most famous charge, Muhammad Ali. Angelo Dundee has passed away at age 90, surrounded by his friends and family in Tampa, Florida. His last public appearance was a few short weeks ago at Muhammad Ali’s 70th birthday celebration in Louisville, Kentucky.
“It was the way he wanted to go,” said son Jimmy Dundee. “He did everything he wanted to do.”
Angelo Dundee, born Angelo Mirena, was a trainer for an impressive six decades. He was elected to the boxing hall of fame in 1994. He trained Ali for most of the Louisville Lip’s career, and their partnership started in 1959 when Ali, then Cassius Clay and a local Golden Gloves champion, called Dundee’s hotel room when Dundee was in town with light heavyweight Willie Pastrano. Their scheduled 5-minute conversation turned into a 2 or 3 hour affair, and the roots for a partnership began. After Ali won his first pro fight, Dundee came on board and would stay with the GOAT until the end of his career.
