For years, Eli Manning was considered the other Manning brother. Peyton Manning got all the glory and credit for running the incredible Indianapolis Colts offense, while Eli was considered good, but not great. Certainly, Eli wasn’t in the same class as Tom Brady, quarterback for the New England Patriots. Perhaps, opinions will be changing after last night. Eli Manning has two Super Bowl rings, and two Super Bowl MVPs for his troubles, with the New York Giants besting the New England Patriots 21-17 to claim Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis last night.
“Great toughness, great faith and great plays by a number of guys today,” said the younger Manning, who guided the Giants on a game-winning 88-yard drive in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter. “It just feels good to win a Super Bowl. It doesn’t matter where you are.”
Making it all the sweeter for Eli and company is the fact that they won the Super Bowl in the stadium built by Peyton Manning. Even better, it was against the hated Patriots. To top it all off, it comes after a season in which Eli Manning faced criticism for declaring himself to be an elite quarterback in the class of one Tom Brady. Turns out, Eli was right on the money with his evaluation of his own skills, as this is two Super Bowls in which he’s triumphed over the vaunted Patriots. One more Super Bowl MVP, and Eli Manning will have tied Joe Montana’s Super Bowl MVP record.
