The Harry Potter series is an owl-poaching worldwide phenomenon. One of the genius things author J.K. Rowling did is age the books as the students within them aged. That allowed the book’s fanbase to grow up as the book’s characters grew up. Well, Rowling has yet to publish anything not directly related to Potter, but that’s about to change with the release of her newest book from Little Brown. Not only is she changing from the Potterverse, she’s also changing audiences. J.K. Rowling’s next book will be aimed at adults.
Said Ms. Rowling, “My next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series. The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry’s success has brought me.”
Of course, the book’s length, subject matter, publication date, and title are unknown at this time, which means that Rowling can always change her mind, but the fact that she’s taking the step of writing a book specifically for adults is pretty interesting. Maybe she doesn’t want to be pigeon-holed as a writer for young children/young adults? Maybe she just wants to get as far from Harry Potter: The Next Generation as possible, since that’s all people really want her to write. I don’t know the reasons why she’s making the moves she is, but I’m sure she has her good reasons (and they’re probably similar to what I’ve been guessing).
