There have been some noteworthy winter storms in recent years, from the 49-state snow storm in 2011 to storms that close airports and paralyzed one of the world’s biggest cities. While winter storms are dangerous and impressive, there’s one thing they don’t have: cool names. Hurricanes get cool names, so why don’t winter storms get good names? Well, thanks to the Weather Channel, that’s about to change. The Weather Channel is going to be naming winter storms this year.
So what are the names? Here’s the list of official names. Warning: these names are awesome.
I really like the selection of names. They cover everything from Greek, Roman, Norse, Basque, and Persian mythology, Shakespeare, New York City subway lines, geological references, and even a reference to the Lord of the Rings. It’s a great cross-section, and having read the names out loud, they all sound like great winter storm names. I mean Orko the Blizzard strikes fear into my heart, I don’t know about anyone else.
