When it comes to politics, Brazil has to be one of the greatest places on earth. When they’re not busy approving threesome marriages, they’re electing clowns to the Senate. However, the political career of 32-year-old Carme Cristina Lima may be cut short after some of her antics on the campaign trail. On election day Sunday morning, police officers noticed a large crowd around Ms. Lima’s car. When cops went over to investigate, they found the standard pile of leaflets instructing people how to vote for her, with an added twist. Carme Cristina Lima was handing out campaign materials with baggies of cocaine attached to bribe people for votes. Lima was running for councillor of Itacoatiara, in the northern state of Amazonas.
“There was a large gathering of people around Ms. Lima, but when they saw the police they all ran away. The candidate and another man also fled by car but officers caught up with them,” said police chief Daniel Ottoni. “According to locals, she had been distributing the drugs since early in the morning, on condition that people vote for her.”
Well, I’d vote for her, if only because I appreciate the craziness and riskiness of her election strategy. However, she’s facing election corruption and drug dealing charges, so she’s probably not going to be able to serve out her term of office without a concurrent term of prison. This is why liquor stores and bars can’t open in some parts of the United States until after the election day voting window has passed.
