Husband and wife Jeff Murawska and Susan Cotey very nearly ended their lives in the wee hours of Thursday morning. Unbeknownst to them, a fire had started in their garage and it was spreading throughout their home while they slept. Fortunately, the two had an extra-special ace in the hole when it comes to fire detection: their pet chicken Cluck Cluck. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin-area couple were awakened from sleep by Cluck Cluck’s frantic squawking and escaped their burning house before it completely burned to the ground. The couple owe their life to their pet chicken.
Cluck Cluck very nearly wasn’t a hero. When the chicken first began wandering over to the Murawska household, their neighbor told them they could kill the chicken because she wasn’t producing any eggs. However, Dennis took pity on the chicken, in part because she has a mutated leg, took her in, built her a coop, and even brings her into the basement during cold nights. Cluck Cluck has finally returned that life-saving favor. They saved her from the frying pan, she saved them from the fire.
“We are used to hearing about a dog or cat or something, but we never heard of a chicken waking up a resident for a fire,” said Alma Center fire chief Jeff Gaede. “That’s pretty amazing.”
